The Challenges of Leadership Authenticity

Leaders struggle with being authentic with their teams.

They’re told to be vulnerable and yet that can backfire.

When a leader is afraid over some aspect of the company and shares that, it can lead to anxiety in employees.

So what to do?

It’s a bit in the way you frame it.

Doug Hensch, author and leadership resilience coach, says that optimism can play a positive role in leading people through challenging times.

But what he recommends is “realistic optimism.”

Realistic optimism builds trust. You’re telling people the truth in a frame of optimism but without any sugar coating.

For example, you might say something like, “Hey, there are more tough times ahead. I don’t have all the answers, AND I know that, working together, we will make the best of this.”
