Looking for a deeper level of emotional intelligence than the average taught means understanding how emotions work within our greater consciousness.
Learning how you’ve given your power away and how to take it back.
Repression and suppression are examples.
If you don’t understand them, you’re more likely to be doing them without awareness.
Repression, in particular, because it’s an unconscious process. It’s the unconscious blocking of unpleasant feelings, impulses, memories, and ideas from your conscious mind.
Suppression is deliberately trying to forget or not think about painful or unwanted thoughts. Think compartmentalization and things like that.
Repression and suppression serve a purpose. They kick in under conditions of emotional overwhelm and enable you to handle things in the moment.
But they can be destructive over the long-term.
Research has linked emotional repression to diminished immune system function.
Repressed emotions also play a leading role in mental health conditions, such as stress, anxiety, and depression.
As you grow personally into new roles and are trying to create new realities in your life, you often bump up against this suppressed and repressed stuff.
Because rising to a new level requires you to be coherent with that new reality.
Many people talk about the subconscious as a force that’s trying to keep things the same.
I disagree.
The greater force I see in people is toward coherence. Toward greater health and potential.
Learning to work with your emotions in a positive way leads you to integration which increases your level of coherence as a being.
It enables you to bring forth latent abilities and to increase your inner peace.
